Beautiful writing, Juliet! Magpies and Cuckoos--gotta love what nature brings us! How wonderful that you celebrate it all... Thanks for sharing your corner of the world.
That Magpie nest is quite the build, Juliet. Hopefully they are able to rebuild nearby and you get to see some nestlings this season. I like that article from Robert E. Fuller - nice variety of nest styles from different bird species.
I've been watching a pair of local Cooper's Hawks the past few months go from nest building to now nesting. As of last weekend, they're on the nest and hoping to see some hawk nestlings in the next week or two.
Thanks Neil, yes the nest is an amazing build! I'm glad you liked Fuller's article and it's great that you're getting to watch hawks making their nest!
a lovely post. I have Magpies in my yard. Over the years their numbers have waxed and waned. Often, I would see them hanging out on top of my horses. Loud, argumentative, they are some of my favorite birds along with my Scrub Jay couple who have come now at least 5 yrs in a row. The numbers of the magpies have lessened, along with the barn swallows, the bats, the mourning doves. I did hear my California Quail father calling the other day. Lot of finches and sparrows. The great migration of American Robins has lessened. Even the starlings are fewer. I try to keep my acre brushy and full of trees and tall grasses for habitat, but it almost seems in vain.
Hi Kay, it's sad to see the numbers of birds declining isn't it? Keeping your acre brushy and full of trees and tall grasses will be helping though, even if it does seem in vain.
It's wonderful to get a close look at the magpie nest. Thank you for sharing. We had a pair nesting opposite and I wished I could have a peep!
Signed and shared the Swift petition. Thank you for this lovely post!
