Thanks for this. My sons love hoverflies and are already on the lookout for them in our garden. Love the way they fly in front of us - always imagine they're taking a good look!
Thanks for sharing this, Juliet. I had not heard of hoverflies before. It is often those overlooked and unappreciated species that do much of the 'heavy lifting' in Nature. Hopefully with awareness we can begin to help rather than hurt what humanity is doing to the world around us.
Thanks for this. Always been fascinated by Hoverflies. Some people think they’re stingers because they’re stripey. Such a shame. I kill nothing and have never used pesticides. The insect decline is frightening. We see a lot here, but definitely less than we used to. Lots of bees in the flowering currant at the moment, so much so that it’s buzzing. No hovers yet though.
It's definitely a shame that people mistake hoverflies for stingers, perhaps their mimicry works too well! Hope you see some overflies in your garden soon. I've only seen a couple so far this year, but it is early in the season.
Great post, Juliet. I absolutely love hoverflies, and do everything I can to encourage them into my garden, where they act as pollinators and help to control aphids. They seem to particularly like marigolds, so I always grow some in containers.

Hi Neil, hoverflies definitely tend to fly under the radar!
